The third and first districts (the two responsible for mid-city) are so short staffed that on many days all available officers are responding to calls and no regular patrolling even happens. This is not the fault of the individual officers or even the commanders for these districts. They would both love to have enough boots on the ground to have police get to know everyone and how they are doing, patrolling and looking to catch people in the act, and so forth. Unfortunately, responsibility with which part of New Orleans gets which officers is out of our control as citizens unless we do something like this security district.

One of the things we hope to accomplish by putting overtime NOPD patrols on the streets is so that they can learn the problem hotspots and gather the evidence they need to make arrests more quickly than they can now.

Private security companies do not offer the added benefit of increase police/community interaction and better communication between the first and third districts, or the benefits of having the police more familiar with the neighborhoods when the go back on to their regular shifts.

The NOPD crime prevention efforts in Lakeview have corresponded with a major decrease in property and persons crimes, and we hope to duplicate their success by utilizing NOPD officers. However, if the NOPD prove to be ineffective, the district can drop them and switch to private security.
